Recent Health, Mind / Body Discussions:
What do you do when you know what you want to do with your life but your not smart enough to do it?
So my school is making us take these tests so they can help us pick classes to help with what we want to do out of high shcool, I'm in 11th grade and ive always had this idea of what I wanted to do with my life but I've also always know it to be pretty much impossible...I want to be a doctor in diagnostics and specialize in infectious diseases and I've known that almost my who life I've been really good at anything to do with health always had straight A's in health class but I'm no where near smart enough to get through college I've known since I was young that I'm a slow learner and when I learn things I can't keep them in my mind and I've been In a special math class all my life and I can't for the life of me find anything out there that would be possible for me to use my knowledge of the human body and things of the sort to make me happy in what ever job I get...my dad told me the other day that he agreed that I would never make I through college so I really don't know what to do at this point....
How can I convince my parents to let me go on birth control?
I will be 18 very shortly, and going off to college in the fall. I would like to go on birth control for as a protective strategy for many reasons:
-If I were ever raped (birth control is better to me than abortion)
-I am a virgin, but if I do decide to have intercourse at some point
-Health benefits (prevents acne, cysts, certain cancers, etc)
The only problem is that my parents won't let me, and I can't afford to pay for it on my own. My dad is Catholic, and therefore is staunchly against it, and my mom is Christian, which means she is against it but slightly more open to the concept than my dad. My mom even used birth control before and after she got married. My parents think that the only reason I want to go on birth control is because I want to have sex with a lot of guys, when I am still a virgin and have shown nothing but upstanding behavior for the past 18 years.
Has anyone else had a similar situation, and somehow overcame it? I am really aggravated that my parents are so narrow-minded about the issue. I would like to have control over my own body, whether I choose to have sex or save myself for marriage.

I know that the Church teaches us that (male) masturbation is wrong because it's disorderly, but is it really wrong if you're not lusting and just want to prevent nocturnal emissions?
Definition of "disorderly":
adjective
1.
characterized by disorder; irregular; untidy; confused: a disorderly desk.
2.
unruly; turbulent; tumultuous: a disorderly mob.
3.
Law . contrary to public order or morality.
So, just bear with me as I try to present this in a different way. When we drink fluids, our body automatically fills up our bladders with the excess fluid that needs to be gotten rid of. Now, we can either urinate on purpose, or we can wait until we simply can't hold it any longer and the urine comes out on its own. But wouldn't going around peeing everywhere fall into the definition of "disorderly" presented by the dictionary? But urinating is necessary because it relieves the body of built-up fluids which have no real purpose anymore inside the body.
Our bodies naturally build up semen, and if we don't release it, it's gonna come out anyway, either by masturbation or nocturnal emission (or sexual intercourse if you're married). If you're single, that semen has no real purpose inside your body because the Church says you should remain a virgin until marriage. Some might argue that you're sinning because of a little inconvenience (wet dreams). Little inconvenience? So - shouldn't peeing your pants be considered an inconvenience as well? Yet we purposely urinate so that doesn't happen.
If you masturbate without lust, what's the real harm? How is your relationship with the Lord being affected if you do that simply for health reasons, with no lusty images in your mind?
@quaz
Eating without hunger is gluttony, a deadly sin.
But you could also theoretically eat without hunger if you're extremely malnourished and need it in order to survive.
Is it safe on the body to have 3 babies back to back to back within 3 years?
I have a family member who has a girlfriend and she is 22. It is kind of annoying that she keeps doing this because they are on assistance, or at least she is. He makes good money but spends it on fun stuff, and medical and food is supplied by the government since they are not "married" but whatever. She had her first one, and then when that baby was 3 months she announced she was pregnant again. She had that baby on Christmas eve and just announced on facebook that they were having ANOTHER one. The first one was VERY premature. Borderline she wasn't going to make it premature, and the second one was also a month early and weighed 3.4 pounds. Now she is pregnant again with a year old child and one that is less than 2 months old. What are the chances that this baby will not be in the NICU for a month like the others? She got pregnant with her last baby and this one while her babies were still in the NICU. Its depressing. Do we just keep on supporting them, or is it our place as family to say something? They don't mind asking anyone for help, so I just want to scream at her to take a pill or use a condom, anything! More importantly what is this doing to HER health?
Is anything asked on yahoo really anyone's business? It is an opinion based site where QUESTIONS are asked and OPINIONS are given as answers.

What is going on with my body? (health crisis)Please help!?
I'm an 18 year old female, and a virgin. I've been on the birth control pill for about two years now for period regulation purposes along with mild acne (hormonal.) I've been experiencing some very odd stomach, gas, and just all around uncomfortableness and fatigue for about four months.Coincidentally, the one night I spent the night at my boyfriend's apartment, I dropped my daily pill in the covers and was unable to take it (I took it the next morning) Now we didn;t have sex, but we were very close and in our undegarments. I am very paranoid about a pregnancy occuring from this, even though it would generally not be anything to really worry about.
But...because I have been experiencing unusual symptoms that I haven't experienced berfore, ( bladder pressure, sudden feeling of needing to urinate, bloating, gas, belching, phlehgm that I keep spitting up, gnawing feeling in upper stomach, tender/sore breasts, and a sort of odd feeling about five inches under my bra like I've had too much salt or something, it's a very strange sort of slight burning feeling.) I am very worried about a VERY MUCH unintended pregnancy.
Moreover, I've actually been having regualr periods (on the exact day they are due and last for 4-5 days as usual) and took two pregnancy tests as well.
*I spent the night on my boyfriend's on the 23rd of October*
*I took one home pregnancy test on the 9th of December and another on the 24th of December
Again, I was on the birth control for two years (about) and have missed a total of three pills. Two of which were several months before I missed that one pill on the 23rd of October (when I spent the night at my boyfriends.)
I know this is a lot of unformation to take in, but I feel that it is all necessary to get the best possible feedback. I haven't had the chance to speak to my parents about this because they are in Europe dealing with the death of their dear friend and I would feel so shameful. I have visited the doctor but never told them about my fear of pregnancy because at the same time, I feel silly about worrying about this. I don't really know what to believe anymore because I feel that my mind is telling me one thing (you crazy teen, you're not pregnant) and my body is telling me another (pregnant? maybe?)
But the periods and the tests totally contradict a pregnancy...or do they?
*Also, my doctors believe that it is all gastritis related and that it may even be a stomach ulcer. (what exacltly are the symptoms of both, based on your experience?) I have been on medication for this for about a month and have even had a couple of urine samples requested, stool, and took one blood test. On January 16th, I had a stomach ultrasound as well. But remember, I couldn't dare tell my doctor that I was in fear of being pregnant without sexual intercourse. This is very embarassing for me. In no means am I ready for sex (my boyfriend and myself.)
I have been very bloated since mid November. My lower abdominal area feel rather firm and there is a sort of indentation a few inches below my belly button, which sort of spearates two little belly fat looking puffs on both sides of that little dent. and it is only noticable to myself. (I did ask one female friend about this. She laughed at me lol.) But in all honesty, I am very concerned about this. Whether I am pregnant or not. Obviously, I will be seeing my doctor again, but I just wanted to hear from another (non-judgemental) party.
In case this helps, I am 4'11, and 96 lbs.
Thank you so much!

Opinion on my essay?! easy 10 points?
The term GM foods or GMOs (stands for genetically-modified organisms) is used to refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest biology techniques. These plants have been modified in the laboratory to improve things such as better resistance to herbicides or upgraded nutritional content. In 1989, dozens of Americans died and several thousands were afflicted and impaired by a genetically modified version of the food supplement L-tryptophan creating a debilitating ailment known as Eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS). (3) Believe it or not, genetically modified foods have been criticized and praised in the media. In the following paragraphs, I will share my opinion and go in depth of how GMOs work.
Environmental activists, religious organizations, public interest groups, professional associations and other scientists and government officials have all raised concerns about GM foods, and criticized agribusiness for pursuing profit without concern for potential hazards, and the government for failing to exercise adequate regulatory oversight. (1)
Although there are many advantages to genetically modified food, in my opinion the potential negatives outweigh the positives. Genetically modified foods were made because there is apparently an “advantage” to the producer or consumer of these modified foods. For instance, lower price for the producer, greater benefit in nutritional value for the consumer. Sounds harmless right? Wrong. There are many harmful effects of GM foods and I believe people should be more aware of what they are actually putting into their body.
The safety assessment of GM foods generally investigates: toxicity, whether or not it can provoke an allergic reaction, nutritional effects associated with genetic modification plus unintentional effects which could result from the genetic insertion. Dr. Arpad Pusztai, a highly respected British scientist, embarked on the first government-funded research project to study the health effects of genetically modified crops on animals. The rats given GM potatoes (raw and cooked) after 10 days showed significant damages - impairment of the immune system, shrinkages of brain, liver and testicle, as well as pre-cancerous cell growth in the intestines and stomach. The unpublished research of Calgene's FLAVR SAVR tomato (first GM food on the U.S. market) noted some laboratory rats that were given the GM crop developed stomach lesions; and seven of the forty rats died within two weeks. In Germany, twelve cows died after digesting Syngenta's GM maize, prompting the Swiss biotech company to compensate the farmer. The recent disappearance of the once populous Monarch butterflies in North America might be related to GM crops. The Monarch butterfly larvae died from eating milkweed that had been contaminated with Bt corn pollen. If wild and domestic animals would only eat natural food and avoid various GM foods, they're certainly sensitive enough to know the distinction between natural and unnatural. (2)
Almost all soybeans are genetically modified. You take a bite into a veggie burger, do you really know what you are eating? You have a right to know what you are putting into your body. Those who are aware of genetically modified foods seem to have strong opinions. The charts below show two sides of positive/negative opinions based on different factors/issues.
*then i put a chart of negative and positive opinions*The fact that these genetically modified foods are being sold without actually research on the effects they could have on the human mind and body, without clearly informing you of this process worries me. I think we should do our research before we even consider putting something into our bodies. You wouldn’t take a medicine or pill without knowing the side effects, so why would you want to risk something genetically modified put into your body?
Just last Tuesday, there was a protest in the United States about this issue. Many people are fighting to have genetically modified foods eliminated completely, while most of us don’t even care to look at the ingredients on the label.
The lack of labeling of genetically modified food violates and harms your right to know what is in our foods - given the list of health, environmental, and socio-political reasons to avoid GM ingredients. Even if GM foods were 100% safe (which they are certainly not), the consumer has a right to know such ingredients - due to their many potential harms. Previously if someone wanted to avoid foods not permitted by certain religions, the process was simple. With transgenic alterations, every food is suspect - and the religious and health-conscious consumer has no way of knowing without a mandated label. The lack of labeling makes it impossible for religious people to observe dietary customs. (3)
Additional Details
In conclusion to the research that I have done, I can recommend one should definitely hold off until the long-term effects of genetically modified foods are 100% verified. For now I shall avoid GM foods at all costs and inform others of the health effects as well.

Will this make me appear weak as a Med School applicant?
As a pre-med undergraduate student, my activities and academics are competitive enough. What I worry about most is my personal statement and interview.
Personal tragedy motivates me to become an Oncologist/Hematologist. My grandmother, who is the world to me, passed away from Lymphoma Cancer last year. I want to write about this tragedy, because it was the very thing that made me consider Health at all, and because it changed my life completely. But my issue is that my deep sense of empathy and acute sensibility causes me to feel pain very deeply, and get very emotional. Also, certain circumstances surrounding her death, has made it harder for me to talk about it (such as the fact that we never told her about her cancer, and how I was away for college, completely ignorant of her deteriorating health, until she was no longer the same person anymore, in appearance or mind).
The mere mention of her now will freeze my body up and make me tremble as I try to hold back tears. I've long since stop trying to hold them back though, and have just let them flow.
My question is, how do I present this in such a way that it is a source of motivation and genuine commitment to saving lives instead of a weakness, or something that will cast me off as an emotional, depressive wreak? Both in my essay and in person? Because I won't lie, for a very long time after her death, I was the most self-deprecating, depressive person in the world. And it's taken me a long time to clear away the fog and see all that I can do for others, due to my passion and capabilities.
What should I avoid and I allow in my essay? How should I compose myself in an interview when talking about her?
Dose a dentist have the license to pull teeth without informing the patient the effects of the extraction?
I never had proper care done to my teeth until recently and I had a hefty list to fix. Very extensive work. I had a huge fear of the dentist mainly because I was so ashamed of the status of my mouth. Unfortunately that is the effects of growing up in a struggling low income home without proper care. They were very welcoming and reassured me I would have a nice smile again. I am an adult with a full time job and seeking to repair my body because I feel its the most valuable investment to make in my life. My dentist pull three teeth which were all rotting away, #5 and two in the upper back on each side. He gave me my options price wise never told me the effects, and now I reflect upon it he was leaning me toward a cheaper solution. He did know I wanted at least 2 implants, even without him giving me the proper diagnostic of what is happening to my bone structure. Pulled them and told me they needed to be healed first before the implants go in. And we could get the other fillings and work I needed to be done in the mean time. I was trusting because I saw he was in practice for 40 years and thought he knew what he was doing. 7 months gone by since my teeth have been pulled. With fillings, a root canal, two crowns, and he was pushing for me to have a bridge( which after discussing with my brother changed my mind on it because it wasn't actually good for your teeth.) I am only 21 and completely new in the world of the mouth. So I want to invest the best care into my mouth at this age and he knew I was serious about fixing my mouth to a nice healthy smile. So now I have about 4,000 dollars I have paid. I feel he took advantage of my benefits, and took in my business. After finally being referred to an oral surgeon I am now finding out the best way to do a procedure for implants would be to put the screws in the same day of the extraction. And the longer the teeth are out of my mouth the weaker my bone gets and the more difficult my surgery gets. I am baffled! I was never told any of this information and I am very upset he put me into this kind of position of my health. With not having any regards to the teeth that were missing and the bone that is disappearing. Now I feel my teeth shifting in the back creating gaps in my teeth where its hard to chew because it hurts when the food gets stuck and hits my gums. Is this man in a wrong? I don't know. Are you suppose to have a license for such kind of practice, Shouldn't he have referred me to a specialist in the fist place? I had no idea there were even oral surgeons in a whole different category than a dentist. Please I am seeking for advice and answer. Thank You
Thank you for the comments, I do have an appointment with a Prosthodontist next week and his examination will help me take the next steps. I just don't want to repeat my unknowledgeable experience. I do not recall signing any paperwork for the extractions of the teeth. I will go in and ask for a copy of my file to review over. The comments are more helpful than you can imagine with my all gratitude, Thank You.
