Recent Religion / Spirituality Discussions:
Have atheists made a living in this section?
Y'all have been here for quite a while now.
Can you call "religion and spirituality" home now? :)
Hi R&S, how many of you actually support same sex marriage?
I have never been on religion and spirituality before but thought I'd actually like to see if anybody here does support same sex marriage. You can't say that all Christians oppose it because I know for a fact that's not true so:
Religion:
Support for gay marriage: Yes/No
Reasons why:
If Christian, do you follow the Bible's verses very strongly?:
For me, I support it. I'm Catholic (most importantly here I suppose) and gay. The two can coexist. My feelings are that the arguments put forward against gay marriage are fundamentally weak. Why do you oppose it "because it's been between a man and a women." Why? "Because it always has been." And what tells you that? "The Bible." Where? "Errrrrrrrr."
I am aware of the Bible verses condemning gay sex, please don't quote them. It is my opinion that people pick and choose from the Bible anyway....they do all sorts of things the Bible forbids like wearing mixed materials, women wearing gold and pearls, eating shellfish, priests shaving, stoning wives and selling daughters into slavery...y'know that usual stuff.
Please no hat'in folks, let's keep this civil.
@Horsesrlove You see, that's just a typical moronic answer, al least others have backed theirs up. I respect everyone's opinions so long as they can support it. Even Nancy, who was...ahem...controversial in her statements backed it up with her knowledge of her faith and her Bible. You? "evil homos are evil" I'm paraphrasing here, but you get the point.
@Nancy Yes, I am aware that the laws regarding the consumption of various animals had been lifted but you've also just got to go in and look at some of the other stuff in there. I have read my Bible, and some of the stuff in it...well...
1 Timothy 2:12 "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent." Where is the basis for that then? For Adam was created first then Eve, what has that got to do with it? And if it was God's plan to have them go forth and multiply from the start, why didn't he create both at the same time? It kinda seems like sex was a bit
@Marshall It's an interesting point you raise about my own faith. Yes, my Church opposes the views I hold on same sex relationships, but the Catholic Church is a bit iffy on a lot of things. I like to think of myself as a liberal Catholic and you'll find that certainly where I live there are a lot of liberal Catholics. Disagreeing with a view held by the church does not mean I should loose my faith. I do believe in God and I do believe in his forgiveness and I think daily about whether or not I am hurting him because that is what I, as a Catholic, am told. But as a human being, I know that I have absolutely no choice in the matter, that you cannot "pray away the gay" and surely a loving, stable gay relationship is a good thing, especially with an exponential population.
As far as NT views on same sex, Jesus doesn't ever mention it. The mentions of gay sex in the NT are in St Paul's letters (1 Romans and 1 Corinthians I think).
Lol, I am Catholic, want to see my certificate of confirmation? Yes, I have a lovely book that tells me where all the authority comes from in the Catholic Church:
-The Bible (as it is interpreted by the church)
-Church Tradition
-The Pope
I'm not an idiot and I'm not a troll and I AM CATHOLIC. The Catholic Church needs to realise that its stance on some key issues (including women priests and gay marriage) are outdated and ridiculous and if they need to listen to what the people are saying.
"Despite the Roman Catholic Church's rigorous opposition to gays getting the right to marry, Pew found that Catholics support gay marriage by a margin of 52 percent to 37 percent. That's a shift from 2010, when just 46 percent of Catholics favored gay marriage." Quote from CNN's religion editor...that's "The News" in case you were wondering. So are 52% of Catholics not Catholics, because I think they'd disagree.

i don't know how to fit God into my religion, even though I believe and I'm catholic.?
I was wondering about God and Jesus' role in Christianity. Please don't reply to this with quotes from the bible because they can open to interpretation, for the most part. This is not a difficult question, so please answer briefly and to the point, thanks!
I recently discovered my spirituality, but I find that whenever I pray or think about it, I'm praying to or thinking about Jesus. Now I know in the old testament that God is destructive and seems to be vengeful or something... (This is the opinion of everyone in my religion class, even my teacher. He was supposed to expand on that point but I don't think he got around to it). I don't know I just feel like I don't know where God fits in. I feel so much love for Jesus but God doesn't really cross my mind. I don't know how to fit them both in or how to "find God".
I really don't care for religion bashers so you're wasting your time if you ridicule me :)
Ah ok, you're all either telling me I'm wrong or to run away from this "cult". Thanks for answering though, guess I need to go read the bible or something. When I grew up I was told that Jesus was the son of God, is this not supposed to be taken literally or something?
Does makeup have anything to do with Religion & Spirituality?
Religion & Spirituality
Do you think the idea of religion is to restrictive spiritually?
Many world religions...islam, judaism, christianity...all have very...limited paths to follow with a god telling you do it this way and that way. But wouldn't you think spirituality is more open itself than religion? There are many different ways people can achieve that one goal they are reaching which ever it may be. I find many religions with a god are actually MALE gods, which is strange since..the god acts like a human in many ways such as justifying the death of millions or the whole ego thing. So what do you think? Is religion too restrictive when it comes to spirituality?
Religion and spirituality
Obviously you can't answer an opinion based question. You can only state an opinion. Saying there is a god or their isn't isn't fact, it's opinion. Using evidence to back up your reasons is answering.
I have noticed that atheists on here tend to give more realistic answers vs the whole god did it or my bible says such and such. Your bible was written by ancient sheepherders in the middle east.
Opinions, Opinions, Opinions.
Who agrees with me.
Whether a god exists to me doesn't matter. All i want is for a universal acceptance of science, logic and reason.
A god could have set things in to motion or it couldn't have. Things we will never know. I will always go where the facts and research takes me, nd honestly evolution has more evidence then religion.
Some people still don't get it why I post under Religion & Spirituality?
I post any question under Religion & Spirituality category, in part because it's got a lot of user activity so I could get more answers.
If the question isn't about religion & spirituality, some answerer in Religion & Spirituality would ask why was the question posted under Religion & Spirituality, maybe they are not smart enough to know my first paragraph?
Religion & Spirituality speaking, When do you think the world will end?
Religion distorts the true nature of spirituality?
-religion segregates while spirituality explains that we are all one and equal.
-religion tells you to worship a god while spirituality tells you that we are our own gods manifesting our own realities.
-people kill in the name of religion while spirituality and its beliefs resonate with love and love only.

yes, no question. was a topic open for discussion.
& what i am talking about relates to the core principles of spirituality u buffoon.
nice one guys. im sorry we disagree but i do indeed believe that we as humans are limitless due to the fact that we only use 10% of our brains and we are capable of so much more. Personally i do not know of any injustice created through those that are spiritual but sadly this is not the case with religion. most of your negative, crude comments to a stranger you do not know from a bar of soap prove that your ideologies are clearly not working either as you have no compassion for a fellow human being.. even if i am wrong surely your religion should teach you that you should not stoop down to my level then hey? i think some deep inner reflection is needed by most of you, and i'm not claiming to be better than any of you as i feel that i need to do the same thing. why attack someone who is just tring to keep an open mind?
