Recent Science Fiction / Fantasy Discussions:

Good YA book recommendations?

I'm trying to gather a list of books to read over the summer. (I am fourteen, by the way). I tend to go for science fiction or fantasy books, although I am willing to stretch beyond that. I have enjoyed books such as the Harry Potter series, the Gone series, The Hobbit, Divergent, The Maze Runner trilogy, The Mortal Instruments series, Unwind, etc. I'm definitely going to start reading the Percy Jackson and The Heroes of Olympus series, as I am years late on that. Any good recommendations?

What do you consider the most realistic science-fiction/fantasy movie?

My vote is Wizard of Oz. From 1939, it sure beats out any computer-generated junk ever since. I was hoping not to be misunderstood. I mean for effects, like that tornado. It was studio generated, but you'd never know it by looking at it. And realistic to look real and not fake. The only thing from Oz that stuck out like a sore thumb was the tail wagging box in the lion's behind.

Please Help Me With This Issue?

The only reason i made the question title that long is because yahoo wouldnt let me make a shorter one. Now heres my problem and i want to know if you have it too and if you know how to fix it. I become so consumed by watching movies and reading books to were i almost begin to hate life. I dont want to commit suicide, but i wish we lived in a different world. I saw lord of the rings, and watched the whole trilogy in one day about five years ago. Now atleast once a month i do the same. I also became addicted to braveheart and other fantasy epics. After im done watching them, i feel extreme depression and i wish i could live in that setting, it makes my life feel absolutely pointless. When i watched the hunger games, i walked out of the theater with my hands in my hair, thinking what to do now. Everytime i see something or read something powerful, it leaves a deep impact on me and i wonder how life is going to keep moving on. I sit and stare at a wall all day and think about what i just saw and wish that that would happen to me, except i know once it does happen its going to suck. When i was a kid i cried for a week wishing that i was a student at hogwarts (2003). I avoid meeting new people because its hard to find people that will understand me. My friends at school have no clue what i do at home and im a complete mystery outside of school, they all think that im a youtube junkie or something. I want to know if you also have that same feeling of emptiness and wishing after you watch an amazing fantasy movie or read a book. If you recently had that problem how did you fix the gap. i dont want to date because im socially awkward and i already play videogames, but none are as powerful as a movie. I cried at the end of braveheart, i feel terrible right now because i just finished watching lord of the rings, and im constantly bombarded with homework which just adds to my self loathing and decreases my ability to handle stress. How do you bridge the gap, how do you find meaning in life. If there is no solution, than can you please recommend movies that affect your mental stability, not horror or love stories. Im talking about science fiction, and fantasy. I played world of warcraft but all that did was suck $200 dollars and a two years from my life. P.s. What would be a good career to get into for one that can never stay focused on something for more than a week, loves movies with a passion, sucks at acting, and great at english, history, and math. People would say that i would make a great teacher P.s.s. Im 16 years old, turning 17 in november, getting my license in december, im a sophmore in highschool P.s.s.s. my only two passions are weightlifting and watching movies. I forgot what the name is, i learned it in psychology, but im the type of person that replaces life experiences through weightlifting i.e. sex, friendship, dating, etc... sorry, i posted this to social sciences, yahoo just sucks. the reason why my title has zero information is because my question is broad and vague. being derogatory towards me doesn't help the problem, it just makes you look bad

What are your favorite authors in the following genres?

Action Thrillers? Chick Lit? Crime? Detective? Family Saga? Fantasy? Historical Fiction? Horror? Mystery? Science Fiction? Romance? I know this is a very broad question - But what I want to do is make a list of "top 10" popular authors in each category with a view to formulating more ebook collections.

Romantic fantasy books? ?

Yeeh I just finished reading the immortals series by alyssa Noel (I loved the series <3) and I was looking for similar books like that. It would be nice if it was science fiction or fantasy. And please be romantic c:

Chances of two young women breaking into the film industry, as writers, ators and directors?

Not just as actors, but as writers and directors, they write all their own screenplay and would act and direct their own films. They are also working on a science fiction fantasy series of books, that they would adapt if lucky to get into the industry What are the chances without going to film school, as most people think film school is a waste of money do you think they would be better going independantly?

what audiobook should I purchase next?

I'm having a bad luck with audiobooks recently. I loved the Hunger Games and I'm looking for the next great thing. I do love the Harry Potter series, but I don't think I can find anything that compares to it. I was listening to Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels because they were entertaining, but they have gotten a little ridiculous as the books go on. I was told to try Ender's Game, and while the narration was excellent, the plot with the bug like aliens wasn't for me. Is there a book you loved? It doesn't have to be fantasy, but I'd like either some kind of science fiction or just great fiction. Please no vampires, or zombies. (unless it's amazing) Good fantasy is acceptable too. If you have an amazing book that doesn't fit within any of these categories, still let me know, and I will give it a try. Thanks :)

Is James Camerons 'Avatar' a science fiction or fantasy film? Or Both?

This is for an english project, but basically i have to access the films value as a science fiction film. Does it have any SF value in your opinion? And what would some of those values be?? I'm just confused where the distinction between SF and fantasy in the story may be. Any help would be appreciated :)

What category does my story fall into?

A girl and her friend get hit by a car. They enter the afterlife, where there is a whole new world to be explored. So far, it's not too adventurous, but that mayyyy change because it involves a secret resistance group who are trying to overthrow some jailers. It contains no magical creatures or anything distinctly magical really. It's not science fiction. It is definitely fictional. These are the categories I'm trying to fit it into. If you have other category ideas, please tell. By the way, I don't know all that much depth about any category (I have a basic picture, though). - Adventure (this looks like a possibility) - Middle Grade (or is that supposed to be more on the modern-daily-life side?) - Offbeat / Quirky (I dunno about this one) - Fantasy (hmm...) - Young Adult (...?) THANK YOU very much for helping poor clueless Luciamaria!

I am going to Open a book store but I do not know were to put the Bible?

Should it be science fiction, fantasy,or Fiction. @Hyouden You do know fiction and science fiction are 2 different things Generally speaking, fiction deals with human relations as governed by the known laws of the universe, and as conducted against a background of the known world's constraints. Science fiction usually deals with human relations when some of the known laws of the universe have been 'altered' or superceded by advances in science - and where the constraints of the known world do not apply. You are a slimy, dispicable, rat-hearted green-discharge of a man
